The Wycliffian ‘Bold & Loyal’ Commendations

The Wycliffian ‘Bold & Loyal’ Commendations are awarded to pupils four times a term and recognise significant and exceptional individual achievement across different aspects of school life.

Bold and Loyal are the qualities chosen by our founder, G.W. Sibly, to reflect those of John Wycliffe, the 14th century English philosopher and reformer after whom the College is named. He was an independent thinker and certainly someone who throughout his life demonstrated a pioneering spirit in thought, word and deed!

Bold awards recognise exceptional academic endeavour and independence of thought, achievements at a high level outside of school or for overcoming significant barriers in some way. Loyal awards are given where pupils demonstrate selflessness and kindness in their actions around school, or, for example, volunteer or give time to charity or community work outside of school. They may also recognise significant examples of leadership.

Pupils across the Senior School are nominated for awards by staff with awards made by the Headmaster in his Study. As part of the Commendation, pupils are invited to sign their name in the Commendation Book, which serves as a permanent record for all awards.

The first pupils who have been commended in the first half term of the academic year 2024-5, are:

Bold

Annie F (13, Lampeter)- for achieving a Gold Award in the recent Cambridge National Chemistry Challenge.

Viggo H (12, Loosley Halls) – for winning the U19 ‘Silver’ Woodfield & Doncaster Junior Open  and earning a call-up to the England Training Camp this month.

Millie B (12, Loosley Halls) – for winning the Karakal Welsh Junior Open 2024 in the U17 category on her first weekend at Wycliffe.

Maximilian K (13, Ward’s) – for terrific shooting results at the Schools National Shooting Championships at Bisley this summer, including winning the Clay Pigeon event and the McQueen (sniper) Cup.

Millie D (11, Collingwood) – for winning the T20 U15 National Cup at Lord’s with her club, Apperley – captaining the side and taking 2 wickets.

Eloise B (13, Collingwood) – for passing her Grade 8 piano exam, with distinction.

Loyal

Georgia M (13, Ivy Grove) – for exceptional help with our recent Sunday Wycliffe Walks community event.

Luca W (12, Ward’s) – for exemplifying Wycliffian virtues in house and around school in his first two weeks at the College.
