Scouting and Other Adventures 1964 – 1968

Be prepared’.  ‘ Bold and Loyal’.

During our time at Wycliffe College, every student was encouraged to belong either to the Combined Cadet Corps or the Scouts. I chose Scouts, as I was already a member of the Scout movement from my Prep School in Bristol and had already completed the equivalent of Bronze DofE. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme was still fairly new when we enrolled and we did the activities alongside our Queen’s Scout award training. The team work, development of initiative, willingness to take calculated risks, preparing and planning well, budgeting and learning the basics of First Aid have all stood us in good stead for the Adventures of Life. We have not tried out Extreme Survival in the style of Bear Grylls, the current Chief Scout, but certainly Scouting at Wycliffe College opened for us many doors for adventures which we would not have had otherwise and gave us confidence to try new things, meet new people, develop resourcefulness and visit unexplored places. Our Adventure in France was the last such event linked with Wycliffe College, but followed on from Cross-Country skiing in Norway (1966), Winter Survival Training in Aviemore (1967), Hiking in the Black Forest (1967), Corsicadventure (1968). Andy also represented our District Scouts at the World Jamboree in 1967.

Read about our adventures on our French Cheese & Wine Tour, 1968 in the link below. This trip was made possible after we applied for and received a Travel Grant from Wycliffe. The purpose of the grant was to allow several boys each year (the school is now co-educational) who intended to visit another country and take part in some adventure of discovery or physical challenge. We undertook this trip on our way back from a Tetbury District Scout Holiday in Corsica in August 1968 for ten days.

Andy went on to become an Engineer while Simon was called to become a Priest in the Church of England in predominantly challenging areas, such as Inner City, multi-faith Birmingham.
